Kerala is a year-round destination, but each season shows a different side of the state. The hills, backwaters and beaches react differently to heat and rain, so the "best" time depends on what you want – clear beach days, misty tea gardens, lush monsoon landscapes or the lowest prices. This month-by-month guide will help you choose.
Kerala's Seasons at a Glance
- Winter / peak season (October–February): pleasant, less humid weather. Best overall time to visit.
- Summer (March–May): hot and humid on the coast; hill stations remain comfortable.
- South-west monsoon (June–September): heavy rain, green landscapes, fewer tourists and lower prices.
- North-east monsoon (October–November): shorter afternoon or evening showers, mainly in the south.
Month-by-Month
January
Cool mornings in Munnar, warm sunny days on the coast. Excellent for houseboats and beaches. Peak season – book early.
February
Similar to January, with slightly warmer days. Great for every region. Eravikulam National Park in Munnar may close for part of this period for the Nilgiri tahr calving season.
March
Temperatures rise on the coast. Hills are pleasant. Good deals start appearing. A good time for wildlife in Thekkady as animals gather near water.
April
Hot and humid on the coast; Munnar and Wayanad remain comfortable. Vishu, the Malayali New Year, is celebrated in mid-April.
May
The hottest month on the coast, with pre-monsoon showers late in the month. Hill stations are popular with domestic travellers escaping the heat.
June
The monsoon arrives in early June. Heavy rain, dramatic skies and waterfalls in full flow. Excellent for Ayurveda, which is traditionally considered most effective in the monsoon. Lowest prices of the year.
July
Peak monsoon. Lush, quiet and romantic, though some outdoor activities may be limited. Houseboat cruises continue, but beaches are rough and swimming is unsafe.
August
Rain begins to ease later in the month. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake in Alleppey is usually held in August. Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, often falls in late August or September.
September
Fewer showers, green landscapes and Onam celebrations. A great value month before peak season.
October
Post-monsoon freshness, with occasional evening showers from the north-east monsoon. Waterfalls are still full. Good shoulder-season prices.
November
Pleasant weather returns across the state; peak season begins. Ideal for a full Kerala tour.
December
Peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year. Book hotels and houseboats well in advance; prices are at their highest.
