Tamil Nadu has some of the grandest temples on earth – towering gopurams, thousand-pillar halls and living traditions dating back over a thousand years. This circuit combines the most important pilgrim sites with Kanyakumari at India's southern tip.
Madurai – Meenakshi Amman Temple
A vast complex with 14 gopurams covered in colourful sculptures. Attend the night ceremony when Lord Sundareswarar is carried to Meenakshi's chamber. Also visit Thirumalai Nayak Palace. Mobile phones are not allowed inside – use the counters.
Rameswaram – Ramanathaswamy Temple
One of the 12 Jyotirlingas and part of the Char Dham. Pilgrims bathe in the 22 theerthams (wells) inside the temple before darshan. The temple's corridor is among the longest in India.
- Dhanushkodi – the ghost town and Arichal Munai point where land ends, about 20 km away.
- Pamban Bridge – the new vertical-lift rail bridge and the road bridge offer dramatic sea views.
- APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial.
Kanyakumari
Where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean meet.

- Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue (connected by a glass bridge)
