Char Dham Yatra Complete Guide: Route, Registration, Best Time and Travel Tips

Plan your Char Dham Yatra – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath route, registration, best time, treks, helicopter options, packing and health tips.

UttrakhandIndia holiday planning

The Char Dham Yatra – a pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalaya – is one of the most important journeys in Hinduism. Every year lakhs of devotees travel these mountain roads, and with good planning the yatra can be spiritually fulfilling and physically manageable. This guide explains the traditional order, the season, registration, treks and practical tips for a smooth journey.

The Four Dhams at a Glance

  • Yamunotri: source of the Yamuna river, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Reached by a trek of roughly 5–6 km from Janki Chatti.
  • Gangotri: associated with the descent of the Ganga, dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The temple is reachable by road.
  • Kedarnath: one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Reached by a trek of about 16–18 km from Gaurikund, or by helicopter.
  • Badrinath: abode of Lord Vishnu and one of the four principal dhams of India. Reachable by road.

The Traditional Order

The yatra is customarily done from west to east: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. This order also works well geographically, starting from Haridwar or Dehradun and returning via Joshimath and Rishikesh.

When Is the Char Dham Yatra Open?

The temples usually open in late April or May (around Akshaya Tritiya) and close around Diwali or Bhai Dooj in October or November. Exact dates are announced each year by the temple committees.

  • May–June: the busiest period with pleasant weather and long queues.
  • July–August: monsoon; landslides and road blocks are common. Travel only with flexible plans.
  • September–October: clear skies, fewer crowds and excellent mountain views – often considered the best time.

Registration

Pilgrim registration with the Uttarakhand government is mandatory. It can usually be done online through the official tourism portal or app, or at registration counters in places like Haridwar and Rishikesh. Carry the registration slip and your photo ID throughout the yatra. Some dhams also have token or slot systems for darshan in peak periods. Always check the current procedure before booking travel.

How Many Days Do You Need?

A comfortable road-based Char Dham takes 9 to 11 days from Haridwar. A helicopter yatra can cover all four dhams in about 5 days. Do Dham (Kedarnath and Badrinath only) can be done in 5 to 6 days.

Sample 10-Day Itinerary from Haridwar

  1. Haridwar to Barkot.
  2. Barkot to Janki Chatti, trek to Yamunotri and return.
  3. Barkot to Uttarkashi.
  4. Uttarkashi to Gangotri and back.
  5. Uttarkashi to Guptkashi or Sitapur.
  6. Trek to Kedarnath; evening aarti.
  7. Morning darshan; trek down to Guptkashi.
  8. Guptkashi to Badrinath via Joshimath.
  9. Badrinath darshan, Mana village; drive to Rudraprayag.
  10. Return to Haridwar via Rishikesh.

Treks, Ponies, Palkis and Helicopters

  • Yamunotri: walk, pony or palki (doli) from Janki Chatti.
  • Kedarnath: walk, pony, palki or helicopter from helipads near Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi. Helicopter tickets should be booked only through the official authorised portal to avoid fraud.

Start treks early in the morning and keep a steady pace. Rest days help older pilgrims.

Health and Fitness

Kedarnath sits at about 3,580 metres and weather can change quickly. Prepare by walking regularly for a few weeks before the yatra.

  • Carry personal medicines and a basic first-aid kit.
  • Pilgrims with heart, lung or blood-pressure issues should consult a doctor; health checks may be conducted on the route.
  • Keep warm and dry – hypothermia is a risk in rain at height.
  • Drink water regularly and eat light, fresh meals.

What to Pack

  • Warm jacket, thermals, woollen cap and gloves (even in May)
  • Raincoat or poncho and waterproof shoes
  • Walking stick for treks
  • Torch, power bank and small backpack
  • Copies of ID, registration and bookings
  • Small amount of cash for remote areas

Accommodation

Options range from GMVN guesthouses and private hotels to dharamshalas and simple lodges near the temples. Kedarnath and Yamunotri have limited, basic stays, so book early during peak season.

Road Safety Tips

  • Travel with an experienced hill driver; avoid night driving.
  • Keep buffer time for landslides, especially in monsoon.
  • Follow traffic diversions and police instructions.
  • Avoid overloading your schedule – a relaxed pace is safer.

Etiquette at the Dhams

Dress modestly, follow queue systems, respect photography restrictions inside temples, and keep the surroundings clean. Plastic is discouraged on trek routes.
