Dwarka and Somnath Pilgrimage Guide: Temples, Darshan Timings and Travel Tips

Dwarka and Somnath pilgrimage guide – Dwarkadhish, Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar, Somnath Jyotirlinga, aarti and light show, best time and itinerary.

Travel GuidesIndia holiday planning

Gujarat's Saurashtra coast is home to two of India's most sacred places: Dwarka, the ancient kingdom of Lord Krishna, and Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. A pilgrimage covering both, along with Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka, is deeply meaningful and easy to plan.

How to Reach

  • Dwarka: nearest airports are Jamnagar (about 135 km) and Rajkot (about 225 km from the new Hirasar airport area). Dwarka has its own railway station.
  • Somnath: nearest railway station is Veraval (about 7 km); the nearest airports are Diu and Rajkot.
  • Between Dwarka and Somnath: about 230–240 km along the coast via Porbandar, a 5–6 hour drive.

Dwarka

Dwarkadhish Temple

Also called Jagat Mandir, this five-storey temple dedicated to Lord Krishna stands near the confluence of the Gomti river and the Arabian Sea. Its flag is changed several times a day. Mangla aarti in the early morning and evening aarti are especially moving.

Gomti Ghat

Pilgrims take a holy dip here before darshan.

Bet Dwarka

An island about 30 km away, believed to be Krishna's residence. Reached by road and the Sudarshan Setu bridge or boats, depending on current arrangements.

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, about 16–17 km from Dwarka, marked by a large statue of Lord Shiva.

Rukmini Devi Temple

Dedicated to Krishna's consort, known for its carvings.

Other spots

Gopi Talav, Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple by the sea and the Dwarka lighthouse.

Somnath

Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple

Rebuilt many times through history, the present temple stands proudly on the seashore. The evening aarti and the light and sound show narrating Somnath's history are highlights.

Triveni Sangam

The confluence of the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati rivers.

Bhalka Tirth

Believed to be where Lord Krishna was struck by an arrow.
