A desert safari is the one Dubai experience almost every traveller books. The choice can be confusing, so here is a clear breakdown.

Types of Desert Safari

Evening Desert Safari (most popular)

Pickup around 3–3:30 p.m. Dune bashing in a 4x4, sandboarding, sunset photos, a short camel ride, then a camp with henna, shisha corner, BBQ dinner (vegetarian options available) and live shows – tanoura, fire show and belly dance. Back at your hotel around 9 p.m.

Morning Desert Safari

Early pickup, dune bashing, sandboarding and camel ride, back by late morning. Shorter and cooler – good if you have an evening flight.

Overnight Safari

The evening programme plus sleeping in a tent under the stars, with breakfast. Wonderful in winter.

Premium / Conservation Safari

Vintage Land Rovers or smaller groups in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, with falconry, wildlife spotting (Arabian oryx, gazelles) and gourmet dinner. Less dune bashing, more nature.

Who Should Avoid Dune Bashing?

Pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, and very young children. Ask for a no-dune-bashing transfer – many operators offer it.

Best Time

October to April is ideal. Summer (June–August) is extremely hot; morning safaris are better then.

Tips

Book with licensed operators; check whether pickup is shared or private.
Carry sunglasses, a scarf for sand and a light jacket in winter evenings.
Eat light before dune bashing if you get motion sickness.
Alcohol is available at some camps for a fee; during Ramadan, shows may be limited.
