Athirappilly Falls, on the Chalakudy river in Thrissur district, is Kerala's largest waterfall and is often nicknamed the "Niagara of India". The river plunges over a wide rock face into a forested gorge, surrounded by the Western Ghats. It is an easy detour on the way from Kochi to Munnar and a highlight in the monsoon.
Where Is Athirappilly?
- From Kochi airport: about 55 km, 1.5 hours.
- From Kochi city: about 70 km, 2 hours.
- From Thrissur: about 60 km.
- From Chalakudy town: about 30 km.
The road from Chalakudy follows the river through plantations and forest.
Viewpoints
Top Viewpoint
A short paved path from the entry gate leads to the top of the falls, where you can see the river rush over the edge.
Bottom Viewpoint
A steeper trail of around 700–800 m with steps leads down to the base, where the full height and spray of the falls are visible. It is the most rewarding view but tiring on the way back up.
