Coorg Travel Guide: Coffee Estates, Waterfalls and Where to Stay

Coorg (Kodagu) guide – Abbey Falls, Raja’s Seat, Dubare elephant camp, Bylakuppe monastery, Talacauvery, coffee estate stays, best time and a 3-day plan.

Travel GuidesIndia holiday planning

Coorg (Kodagu) in Karnataka is a hilly district of coffee and pepper estates, misty forests and the warm hospitality of the Kodava people. It is about 5–6 hours from Bengaluru and pairs perfectly with Mysore and Ooty.

Things to Do

  • Abbey Falls – a short walk through coffee plantations to a 70-foot waterfall (best after the monsoon).
  • Raja's Seat – sunset gardens in Madikeri with valley views.
  • Madikeri Fort and the Omkareshwara Temple.
  • Dubare Elephant Camp – watch elephants bathe in the Cauvery (morning), plus river rafting in season.
  • Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), Bylakuppe – one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India.
  • Talacauvery – the source of the Cauvery river, with Bhagamandala temple below.
  • Mandalpatti – jeep ride to a grassland viewpoint above the clouds.
  • Iruppu Falls and Nagarhole for wildlife on the southern side.

Coffee Estate Stays

Stay in a plantation homestay or resort and take an estate walk to learn how coffee and pepper are grown. Many homestays serve Kodava dishes like pandi curry, kadambuttu and noolputtu.

How to Reach

  • Road: Bengaluru → Madikeri about 260 km (5–6 hrs); Mysore → Madikeri about 120 km (3 hrs).
  • Air: Mangaluru (about 140 km) or Bengaluru.
  • Rail: Mysuru is the nearest major station.

Best Time

  • October–March: pleasant and clear – ideal.
  • April–May: warm, coffee blossom season.
  • June–September: heavy monsoon – spectacular waterfalls but leeches and slippery roads.

3-Day Plan

  1. Day 1: Bylakuppe Golden Temple, Dubare, check into an estate.
  2. Day 2: Abbey Falls, Madikeri Fort, Raja's Seat sunset.
  3. Day 3: Mandalpatti sunrise or Talacauvery; depart.
