Goa for Christmas and New Year: Parties, Midnight Mass and Booking Tips

Planning Goa for Christmas and New Year? Midnight mass, beach parties, fireworks, Sunburn-style festivals, hotel prices, transport and safety tips.

Travel GuidesIndia holiday planning

From mid-December to the first days of January, Goa is India's biggest party – but it is also deeply festive in a traditional way. Here is how to get the best of both.

Christmas in Goa

Goa's Catholic heritage shines at Christmas. Houses hang paper star lanterns, cribs (nativity scenes) appear in villages, and bakeries sell bebinca, neureos and kulkuls.

  • Midnight Mass: attend at the Basilica of Bom Jesus or Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panjim, or a village chapel for a more intimate service. Arrive early and dress modestly.
  • Carol singing and Christmas markets in Panjim and Margao.
  • Fontainhas, Panjim's Latin quarter, is beautiful in the evenings.

New Year's Eve

  • North Goa beaches – Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator and Morjim – host big parties, clubs and fireworks.
  • Music festivals usually take place in late December; check line-ups and tickets well in advance.
  • Casino cruises on the Mandovi river run special New Year packages.
  • South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Colva, Benaulim) is calmer – beach-shack dinners and fireworks without the crush.

When to Book

Hotels and flights for 24 December–1 January often sell out by October. Rates can be two to three times higher than in early December. If dates are flexible, travel 10–20 December or 2–10 January for festive vibes at lower prices.

Getting Around

  • Rent a scooter (carry your licence, wear a helmet) or hire a taxi via the official app-based or tourist taxi services.
  • Expect heavy traffic near Baga–Calangute on 31 December; walk where you can.
  • Avoid drinking and driving – police checks are frequent.

Safety Tips

  • Do not swim at night or after drinking; observe lifeguard flags.
  • Keep valuables in the hotel safe.
  • Buy event tickets only from official sources.
  • Book a ride home in advance on New Year's Eve.
