Kasol and Parvati Valley Guide: Villages, Treks, Cafés and Travel Tips

Kasol and Parvati Valley guide – Chalal, Tosh, Kalga, Manikaran, Kheerganga and Rudranag treks, best time, cafés, stays and tips.

Travel GuidesHimachal Pradesh

Kasol, a small village on the banks of the Parvati river in Himachal Pradesh, has become one of India's favourite backpacker destinations. Pine forests, rushing water, laid-back cafés and easy hikes to mountain villages give the Parvati Valley a unique charm. This guide helps you plan a relaxed and responsible trip.

How to Reach Kasol

  • From Delhi: overnight Volvo buses run to Bhuntar or directly to Kasol (around 12–14 hours).
  • By air: Bhuntar (Kullu) airport is about 30 km away.
  • From Manali: about 75–80 km via Kullu and Bhuntar.

From Bhuntar, local buses and taxis follow the Parvati river to Kasol.

Best Time to Visit

  • March–June: pleasant weather and green valleys – the most popular period.
  • July–August: monsoon; landslides possible on the valley road.
  • September–November: clear skies and crisp air – excellent for treks.
  • December–February: cold, with snow in higher villages like Tosh.

Places to Explore

Chalal

A short walk across a bridge from Kasol, through pine forest to a quiet village with riverside spots.

Manikaran Sahib

About 4 km from Kasol, known for its hot springs, Sikh gurudwara and Shiva temple. The langar (community kitchen) serves free meals.

Tosh

At the end of the road near Barshaini, a hillside village with views of snow peaks and glaciers.

Kalga and Pulga

Peaceful villages above Barshaini, surrounded by apple orchards and forests.

Malana

A remote village with its own ancient customs and rules. Visitors must respect local restrictions, avoid touching walls, temples or people, and follow instructions strictly.

Treks from the Parvati Valley

  • Kheerganga: about 10–12 km from Barshaini, with hot springs at the top. Camping rules on the meadow have changed over time, so check current regulations.
  • Rudranag: a short trek to a waterfall flowing over a serpent-shaped rock.
  • Sar Pass and other high treks: for experienced trekkers with organised groups.

Sample 3-Day Plan

  1. Day 1: Arrive in Kasol; walk to Chalal; evening at riverside cafés.
  2. Day 2: Manikaran Gurudwara and hot springs; drive to Barshaini and hike to Kalga or Tosh.
  3. Day 3: Trek to Rudranag or relax; return to Kasol or continue to Manali.

Cafés and Food

Kasol is known for its cafés serving Israeli dishes such as shakshuka and hummus, along with momos, thukpa, wood-fired pizzas and fresh trout. Many cafés have riverside seating.

Where to Stay

From budget hostels and riverside camps to boutique cottages in Kasol and Chalal. Higher villages like Tosh and Kalga have simple guesthouses with views.

Responsible Travel

The Parvati Valley has a reputation for drug use. Narcotics are illegal in India and carry strict penalties – stay away from them. Also:

  • Carry your waste back; the valley struggles with litter.
  • Respect local customs, especially in villages like Malana.
  • Avoid loud music near villages and temples.
  • Do not camp in restricted areas.

Practical Tips

  • Carry cash; ATMs are limited and may run out.
  • Mobile network is patchy beyond Kasol.
  • Wear good shoes for forest trails.
  • Avoid trekking alone; inform your stay about your plans.
