Manali in Winter: Snowfall, Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Travel Tips

When does it snow in Manali? Your winter guide to Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu, Christmas and New Year, road rules, what to wear and a 4-day itinerary.

Travel GuidesHimachal Pradesh

Manali is North India's favourite winter escape. Within a day's drive of Delhi you can be throwing snowballs in Solang Valley or crossing the Atal Tunnel into the white world of Lahaul. Here is how to plan it.

When Does It Snow in Manali?

  • December: first snowfall in Solang and upper areas; town snowfall is possible in late December.
  • January: the snowiest month. Manali town often gets snow.
  • February: still reliable snow at Solang and Sissu, with clearer skies.
  • March: snow melts in town; patches remain higher up.

Christmas to New Year is the busiest week. For snow plus fewer crowds, aim for mid-January to mid-February.

Top Winter Experiences

Solang Valley

About 14 km from Manali, Solang is the winter playground – skiing lessons, snow scooters, tubing and the ropeway. Hire snow suits and boots at the base.

Atal Tunnel and Sissu

The 9 km Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass keeps Lahaul connected through winter. On the far side, Sissu has frozen waterfalls and wide snowfields. Access depends on road conditions and police permission after snowfall.

Old Manali and Hadimba Temple

The cedar-wood Hadimba temple looks magical in snow. Old Manali's cafés are perfect for warming up.

Vashisht Hot Springs

Soak in the natural hot water baths at Vashisht – a treat on cold days.

Rohtang Pass in Winter

Rohtang (3,978 m) is closed in winter, typically from November to May. Summer visits require an online permit from the Rohtang permit portal.

Getting There

  • Volvo bus from Delhi: overnight, 12–14 hours – the most popular budget option.
  • Fly to Bhuntar (Kullu): about 50 km from Manali; flights can be affected by weather.
  • Self-drive: carry snow chains and drive only in daylight beyond Manali.

What to Wear

Thermals, a fleece, a waterproof padded jacket, waterproof boots, gloves and a beanie. Snow gear can be rented in Solang.
