Rann Utsav Guide: White Desert of Kutch, Tent City and Full Moon Nights

Plan Rann Utsav in Kutch – White Rann at Dhordo, tent city packages, full moon nights, Kala Dungar, Bhuj and craft villages, permits, best time and itinerary.

Travel GuidesIndia holiday planning

The Great Rann of Kutch is a vast seasonal salt marsh in Gujarat that dries into a dazzling white desert in winter. Rann Utsav, the festival built around it, has become one of India's most photographed experiences.

When Is Rann Utsav?

The festival typically runs from around November to February, with the tent city at Dhordo hosting visitors throughout. The salt flats are at their whitest from December to February. Full moon nights are magical – the desert glows under moonlight – so they sell out first. Check current dates on Rann Utsav's official site or Gujarat Tourism.

The Tent City

Dhordo's tent city offers non-AC, AC, premium and luxury tents with meals, cultural evenings, folk music and dance, camel cart rides to the white Rann, paramotoring, ATVs and craft stalls. Packages are usually sold for 1–3 nights.

Things to Do in Kutch

  • India Bridge (as far as tourists are allowed towards the border).
  • Bhuj – Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal, Swaminarayan temple, and the moving Smritivan earthquake memorial.

  • Mandvi – beach, shipbuilding yards and the Vijay Vilas Palace.
  • Dholavira – a UNESCO-listed Harappan city (a long day trip).
