A day trip from Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass is the most popular excursion in Sikkim. The road climbs from forests to snow-covered slopes, reaching a glacial lake and the India–China border at over 4,000 metres. Because it is a protected border area, planning and permits are essential.
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake
- Altitude: about 3,750 metres.
- Distance from Gangtok: about 38–40 km, 2–2.5 hours.
- An oval glacial lake, sacred to local people, that changes colour with the seasons and often freezes in winter.
- Yak rides, momos and hot tea are available at stalls by the lake.
Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir
A shrine dedicated to an Indian Army soldier, revered as a protector of soldiers in the region. Visitors stop here on the way to or from Nathula. The "New Baba Mandir" is the one most tourists visit.
Nathula Pass
- Altitude: about 4,310 metres.
- One of the trading passes between India and Tibet (China), historically part of the Silk Route.
- Visitors can see the border fence and the army memorials.
- Open on specific days of the week for Indian nationals only, subject to weather and administrative decisions.
Permits
- Permits for Tsomgo and Nathula are arranged through registered travel agents in Gangtok, usually a day in advance.
- You need original photo ID and passport-size photographs.
- Tourists generally must travel in permit-registered local vehicles.
- Nathula has a daily cap on visitors, so book early in peak season.
- Foreign nationals may visit Tsomgo with permits but not Nathula.
Rules change, so always confirm the current process.
Best Time to Visit
- December–March: snow around the lake and passes – very popular, but roads may close after heavy snowfall.
