Sikkim changes dramatically through the year. Spring paints the valleys with rhododendrons, autumn brings crystal-clear views of Kanchenjunga, winter covers the high passes in snow, and the monsoon turns everything green – but also brings landslides. Choosing the right time makes a big difference to your trip.
Sikkim's Seasons at a Glance
- Spring (March–May): flowers in bloom, pleasant days – one of the best times.
- Monsoon (June–September): heavy rain, landslides and cloudy views.
- Autumn (October–November): clear skies and the best mountain views.
- Winter (December–February): cold, with snow at higher altitudes; some routes close.
Month-by-Month
January
Very cold in North Sikkim and East Sikkim's high passes, with snow at Tsomgo, Nathula, Zuluk and Lachung. Gangtok is chilly but sunny. Roads to Gurudongmar and Zero Point may be closed.
February
Still cold with good snow chances. Losar (Tibetan New Year) is celebrated around this time. Some high roads remain closed.
March
Snow begins melting; early rhododendrons appear at lower altitudes. Pleasant in Gangtok and Pelling.
April
Peak rhododendron season in Yumthang, Varsey and Singalila areas. Lovely weather – one of the busiest months.
May
Warm and pleasant; Yumthang's Valley of Flowers is at its colourful best. Saga Dawa, an important Buddhist festival, often falls in May or June.
June
Monsoon begins. Landslides start affecting North Sikkim. Fewer tourists and lower prices.
July and August
Peak monsoon. Heavy rain, frequent landslides and limited mountain views. Travel only with flexible plans.
September
Rain eases towards the end of the month; the landscape is lush. Pang Lhabsol festival celebrates Kanchenjunga.
October
Clear skies and sharp Kanchenjunga views. Excellent for photography and trekking. Durga Puja and Dussehra bring holiday crowds.
November
Crisp, clear and cooler – arguably the best month for views. Ideal for Gurudongmar, Pelling and Darjeeling.
December
Cold with the first snow at high altitudes. Christmas and New Year are festive in Gangtok. Some high roads may close after snowfall.
