Muktinath, at about 3,710 m in Nepal's Mustang district, is sacred to both Hindus (as one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu) and Buddhists (Chumig Gyatsa). Pilgrims bathe under 108 water spouts and in the two kunds before darshan.
Documents for Indian Pilgrims
A valid passport or voter ID card is required for Nepal; Aadhaar is not accepted for adults. The Annapurna Conservation Area entry permit and TIMS-type registration may be needed for the Mustang region – usually arranged by your operator. See our Nepal trip guide.
Route
Kathmandu or Gorakhpur/Sonauli → Pokhara → Jomsom → Muktinath
Pokhara to Jomsom
- Flight (20 minutes): spectacular views between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. Flights operate only in the morning and are often delayed or cancelled due to wind and clouds – keep a buffer day.
- Jeep (8–10 hours): via Beni, Tatopani and Kalopani along the Kali Gandaki gorge. Rough but improving road.
Jomsom to Muktinath
About 1.5 hours by jeep (via Kagbeni). From the parking area, walk or take a pony/e-rickshaw for the last stretch to the temple.
Helicopter
Same-day helicopter tours from Pokhara or Kathmandu are available for those short on time or unable to travel by road – darshan time is limited and altitude acclimatisation is minimal.
Altitude Care
Muktinath is high. Ascend gradually, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and consult your doctor if you have heart or BP issues. Read our altitude sickness guide.
Best Time
March–June and September–November. Winters are very cold with snow; monsoon brings landslide risk on the road (Mustang itself is in a rain shadow).
