Ravangla and Namchi Guide: Buddha Park, Char Dham and South Sikkim

South Sikkim guide – Ravangla Buddha Park, Ralang Monastery, Maenam, Namchi Char Dham, Samdruptse, Temi Tea Garden, best time, stays and route tips.

Travel GuidesSikkim

South Sikkim is quieter than Gangtok or North Sikkim but full of spiritual landmarks, tea gardens and mountain views. Ravangla and Namchi fit naturally into a route between Gangtok and Pelling, and are ideal for travellers who enjoy a slower pace.

Ravangla

Ravangla sits on a ridge at around 2,100 metres with views of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding peaks.

Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal)

A beautifully landscaped park with a giant statue of the Buddha, built to mark the 2,550th birth anniversary of the Buddha. The walk around the statue offers wonderful mountain views on clear days.

Ralang Monastery

A large monastery of the Kagyu tradition, known for its colourful architecture and annual festivals.

Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary

Forest trails for birdwatching and a trek to Maenam Hill for panoramic views (go with a guide).

Borong Hot Springs

Natural hot springs near Ravangla, popular in winter.

Namchi

Namchi, the district headquarters, has two major spiritual landmarks.

Char Dham (Siddheshwar Dham)

A pilgrimage complex on Solophok Hill with replicas of the four dhams – Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannath Puri and Rameswaram – the twelve Jyotirlingas and a giant statue of Lord Shiva. It is especially popular with families and pilgrims.

Samdruptse Statue

A huge statue of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) on Samdruptse Hill, overlooking the valleys.

Rock Garden and Ngadak Monastery

Gardens and an old monastery near the town.

Temi Tea Garden

Sikkim's only tea estate, spread over rolling slopes. Temi tea is highly regarded – buy some as a souvenir and enjoy the views over the estate.

Best Time to Visit

  • March–May: pleasant weather and flowers.
  • October–December: clear mountain views.
  • January–February: cold but sunny.
  • June–September: monsoon with possible landslides.
