Sikkim in Winter: Where to See Snow and How to Plan a Snow Trip

Sikkim winter guide – where to see snow at Tsomgo, Nathula, Zero Point, Lachung and Zuluk, road closures, permits, clothing, safety and a 6-day itinerary.

SikkimIndia holiday planning

Winter transforms Sikkim's high passes and valleys into a snowy wonderland. Clear blue skies, frozen lakes and snow-dusted monasteries make it one of the best times for photography and snow play. But winter also brings road closures and freezing temperatures, so careful planning is important.

When Is Winter in Sikkim?

  • December: cold, clear skies; first snowfall at high altitudes.
  • January–February: peak snow at Tsomgo, Nathula, Zuluk and North Sikkim.
  • March: snow starts melting; still possible at higher points.

Gangtok itself rarely gets heavy snow, but it is cold and sunny.

Where to See Snow

Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir

The easiest place to see snow, about 40 km from Gangtok. The lake often freezes. Roads may close after fresh snowfall.

Nathula Pass

Snow-covered border pass for Indian nationals, open on specific days and subject to weather.

Lachung and Zero Point (Yumesamdong)

North Sikkim's snow destination. Lachung often sees snowfall; Zero Point is usually blanketed in snow but may be inaccessible.

Lachen and Gurudongmar

Extremely cold; Gurudongmar is often frozen. Access frequently closes in winter – check before planning.

Zuluk and Nathang Valley

The Old Silk Route's zigzag roads and Nathang Valley look spectacular in snow.

Road Closures and Flexibility

Heavy snowfall can close roads to Nathula, Zero Point, Gurudongmar and Zuluk for days. Permits are not issued when roads are shut. Build a buffer day into your trip and have alternatives such as Ravangla, Pelling or Darjeeling.

What to Wear

  • Heavy down jacket and thermal innerwear
  • Woollen cap, neck warmer and insulated gloves
  • Waterproof snow boots (gumboots can be rented near Tsomgo)
  • Woollen socks – several pairs
  • Sunglasses for snow glare

Driving and Safety

  • Travel with experienced local drivers – icy roads need skill.
  • Avoid early-morning and late-evening drives on high roads due to black ice.
  • Respect army and police instructions.
  • Keep sightseeing at high passes short to avoid altitude sickness.

Winter Festivals

  • Losar: Tibetan New Year, usually in February or March.
  • Christmas and New Year: festive in Gangtok and Darjeeling.
  • Kagyed Dance: monastery masked dances in December in some years.

Sample 6-Day Winter Itinerary

  1. Bagdogra/NJP to Gangtok.
  2. Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula (if open).
  3. Gangtok to Lachung.
  4. Zero Point or Yumthang snow (as conditions allow); back to Gangtok.
  5. Gangtok to Pelling or Darjeeling.
  6. Departure.

Tips for Families

  • Children feel cold quickly – dress in layers.
  • Carry warm snacks and hot water flasks.
  • Consult a doctor before taking very young children to high passes.
