Kedarnath Temple, standing at about 3,580 metres against a backdrop of snow peaks, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and one of the Char Dhams. Unlike most temples, it cannot be reached by car – the final stretch is a mountain trek. For many pilgrims, the walk itself becomes part of the devotion. This guide explains everything you need to know to complete the Kedarnath trek safely and comfortably.

How to Reach the Start of the Trek

The trek begins at Gaurikund, but private vehicles usually stop at Sonprayag, about 5 km before Gaurikund. From Sonprayag, shared jeeps run to Gaurikund.

  • From Haridwar or Rishikesh: around 210–230 km to Sonprayag via Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Guptkashi – a full day's drive.
  • Nearest airport: Jolly Grant, Dehradun.
  • Nearest railway stations: Haridwar and Rishikesh.

Most pilgrims spend the night before the trek at Guptkashi, Phata, Sitapur or Sonprayag so they can start early.

Trek Distance and Route

The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is roughly 16–18 km one way. The path is paved and well marked, with a steady climb. Key points along the way include:

  • Gaurikund – starting point with hot springs and the Gauri Kund temple.
  • Jungle Chatti – forested stretch with tea stalls.
  • Bhimbali – a common rest stop with facilities.
  • Linchauli – the trail opens up with views of the valley.
  • Base Camp – the final approach to the temple town.

How Difficult Is the Trek?

The Kedarnath trek is moderate. There are no technical sections, but the continuous ascent and altitude make it tiring. Fit walkers typically take 6–8 hours up and 4–6 hours down. Older pilgrims may take longer and should start very early.

Alternatives to Walking

  • Pony or mule: available at Gaurikund at regulated rates.
  • Palki (doli) or kandi (basket carried by a porter): for those unable to ride or walk.
  • Helicopter: shuttle flights from helipads at Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi take a few minutes. Book only through the official authorised portal; fake websites are a known problem.

Best Time to Visit

Kedarnath usually opens in late April or May and closes around Bhai Dooj in October or November.

  • May–June: pleasant days, heavy crowds and long queues.
  • July–August: monsoon; landslides and slippery trails. Travel only with flexibility.
  • September–October: crisp weather, clear views and fewer people.

Registration

Pilgrim registration with the Uttarakhand government is mandatory. Register online in advance and carry the confirmation along with your photo ID. Checks are conducted at points such as Sonprayag.

Where to Stay

At Kedarnath, accommodation includes GMVN huts, private tents, dharamshalas and basic lodges. Facilities are simple and it gets very cold at night. In peak season, book early. Many pilgrims prefer to trek up, attend the evening aarti, stay overnight and have darshan early the next morning before trekking down.

Darshan Tips

  • Queues can be very long in peak season; start early.
  • Special puja bookings are available through the temple committee.
  • Visit the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi behind the temple and the Bhairavnath Temple on a small hill nearby.
  • Respect photography restrictions inside the temple.

Fitness Preparation

Start preparing at least three to four weeks before the trek:

  • Walk briskly for 45–60 minutes daily.
  • Climb stairs to strengthen legs and lungs.
  • Practise breathing exercises.
  • Break in your trekking shoes.

If you have heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, consult your doctor. Health screening camps may be set up along the route.

Altitude and Weather Safety

  • Ascend slowly and rest when tired.
  • Keep sipping water and avoid alcohol.
  • Watch for headache, nausea or breathlessness – descend if symptoms worsen.
  • Weather changes quickly; carry rain gear and warm layers even on sunny days.
  • Avoid walking after dark.

Packing List

  • Warm jacket, thermals, cap and gloves
  • Waterproof jacket or poncho
  • Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip
  • Walking stick
  • Small backpack, water bottle and snacks
  • Torch, power bank and personal medicines
  • ID and registration copies

Food on the Trail

Tea stalls and small eateries along the route sell tea, maggi, parathas and basic meals. Prices rise with altitude. Carry dry fruits and energy bars for quick energy.

Combining Kedarnath with Other Places

Kedarnath pairs naturally with Badrinath as a Do Dham Yatra, or with Yamunotri and Gangotri as part of the full Char Dham. You can also add Tungnath and Chopta for a short Himalayan trek.

Responsible Pilgrimage

Carry your waste back down, avoid plastic, use designated toilets and respect the fragile environment around the shrine.
