Pangong Lake Guide: How to Reach, Where to Stay and Best Time

Pangong Tso travel guide – route from Leh via Chang La, permits, camps at Spangmik and Merak, best time, the frozen lake in winter.

Travel GuidesLadakh

Pangong Tso is the 130-plus-km long lake that stretches from Ladakh into Tibet, famous for its shifting shades of blue. Sitting at around 4,250 m, it is the highlight of most Ladakh trips.

How to Reach

From Leh (about 160 km, 5–6 hours)

The classic route crosses Chang La (about 5,360 m) via Karu and Sakti. Stop briefly at the pass – do not linger at that altitude.

From Nubra via Shyok (about 160 km, 6–7 hours)

The Shyok river route lets you do Leh → Nubra → Pangong → Leh as a loop without backtracking. Check road conditions; water crossings can rise in the afternoon.

Permits

An Inner Line Permit is required for domestic tourists, along with the environment fee. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. See our Ladakh permit guide.

Where to Stay

  • Spangmik – the main cluster of camps and cottages, closest to the famous shoreline.
  • Man and Merak – quieter villages further along, with homestays and simpler camps.
  • Lukung – at the start of the lake, with a few camps.

Camps range from basic tents to insulated cottages with attached bathrooms. Nights are cold even in summer – often below 5°C – so pick a stay with heavy quilts or heaters.

Day Trip or Overnight?

A day trip from Leh means 10–12 hours of driving and little time at the lake. Staying overnight lets you see sunset, a sky full of stars and the morning colours. It is also more relaxing for acclimatisation, as long as you have spent 2 nights in Leh first.

Best Time

  • May–June: ice melting, vivid blue water.
  • July–September: best weather and colour.
  • Winter (December–March): the lake freezes and you can see it as a white sheet; only a few homestays stay open.

Tips

  • Spend at least two nights in Leh before going to Pangong.
  • Carry warm layers, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Mobile coverage is limited – inform family in advance.
  • Do not drive onto the lakeshore; it damages the fragile ecosystem.
  • Carry back your plastic.
