Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert, so the "season" is defined by snow on the passes, not rain. Here is how to pick your month.
Summer Season (May to September) – Best for Most Travellers
- May: Flights operate all year, but the Srinagar–Leh road via Zoji La usually opens by April–May. Lakes may still be partly frozen early in the month. Fewer crowds.
- June: The Manali–Leh highway typically opens by late May or June. Peak tourist month – book everything early.
- July–August: Warm days (20–30°C in Leh), clear skies. Ladakh receives little rain, but landslides on the Manali and Srinagar routes are possible in monsoon.
- September: Many consider this the sweet spot – crisp air, golden poplars, fewer people, and good photography.
Shoulder Season (October to Mid-November)
Nights drop below freezing; some camps at Pangong and Nubra close by mid-October. The Manali–Leh road usually closes in late October or November. Great for solitude if you fly in.
Winter (December to March) – For the Adventurous
Temperatures fall to –20°C at night. Pangong freezes solid, and the famous Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar river runs in January–February. Only fly-in access is reliable. Hotels that stay open in winter offer heating at a premium. Snow leopard tours in Hemis National Park are a growing winter attraction.
Festivals
- Hemis Tsechu (June/July, dates follow the Tibetan calendar) – masked cham dances at Hemis monastery.
- Losar (Ladakhi New Year, December–January).
- Ladakh Festival (September) – cultural programmes in Leh.
