For many years, Khardung La was the famous "highest motorable road" on every Ladakh traveller's list. Today, the road to Umling La in south-eastern Ladakh climbs far higher, to roughly 5,800 metres, and has become the new bucket-list ride and drive. Combined with the remote village of Hanle and its world-class night skies, it offers one of the most extraordinary journeys in India. This guide explains how to plan it safely.
Where Are Umling La and Hanle?
Both lie in the Changthang region of eastern Ladakh, close to the international border. Hanle is a small village on a wide plateau, home to a centuries-old monastery and the Indian Astronomical Observatory. Umling La is a high pass further south-east, reached by a road built by the Border Roads Organisation.
The region is very remote. There are few villages, limited fuel, and mobile networks are weak or absent outside Hanle.
Why Visit?
- The altitude record: standing at one of the highest motorable points on Earth is an unforgettable moment.
- Hanle's dark skies: the area is part of a designated dark-sky reserve, and on clear moonless nights the Milky Way is spectacular.
- Changthang landscapes: endless plateaus, wild horses (kiang), marmots and nomadic herders.
- Few crowds: compared with Pangong, this region remains quiet.
Best Time to Go
The usual season is June to September, when roads are clear of snow. Early and late in the season, nights are extremely cold and sudden snowfall can close the pass. Road access to Umling La can also be restricted at short notice for administrative or security reasons, so stay flexible.
Permits
You need an Inner Line Permit that specifically includes Hanle and Umling La. Not all standard Ladakh permits cover these areas, so ensure your permit lists them. Carry original ID and multiple photocopies, as there are several check posts. Foreign nationals may face additional restrictions near the border. Always check the latest rules before travelling.
How to Get There
There are two common approaches from Leh:
Via Chumathang and Nyoma
The direct route follows the Indus south-east past the Chumathang hot springs and the army base at Nyoma to Hanle – about 250–270 km and a long day.
Via Pangong and Rezang La
If you are already at Pangong, you can drive south along the lake via Merak and Chushul, pass the Rezang La War Memorial and continue to Hanle. This is scenic but rough in places.
From Hanle, Umling La is a day excursion; most travellers go up in the morning and return to Hanle the same day.

Altitude Safety
The altitude here is extreme, and the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness is real.
- Spend at least two nights in Leh before heading east.
- Do not try to reach Umling La early in your trip.
- Limit your time at the top to a short stop for photos.
- Keep hydrated, eat light meals and avoid alcohol.
- Carry an oxygen cylinder or ensure your vehicle has one.
- If anyone feels very unwell, descend without delay.
People with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, pregnant travellers and very young children should seek medical advice before considering this trip.
Vehicles and Fuel
A sturdy SUV with a driver experienced in high-altitude roads is strongly recommended. Fuel is scarce: fill up in Leh and wherever available on the way (for example at Nyoma when open), and carry extra. Riders should travel in groups with a backup vehicle.
Stargazing at Hanle
Hanle's high altitude, dry air and lack of light pollution create exceptional conditions. Local homestays often offer basic telescopes, and some hosts are trained "astro-ambassadors" who can guide you. To make the most of it:
- Plan your visit around the new moon.
- Bring warm clothing – nights are freezing even in summer.
- Avoid using bright torches; use red light if possible.
- Respect the observatory's rules and do not shine lights towards it.
Where to Stay
Hanle has simple homestays and a few guesthouses. Rooms are basic, with shared or limited hot water and intermittent electricity. Expect warm hospitality, butter tea and hearty home-cooked food. Booking ahead is wise in peak season.
Packing Checklist
- Down jacket, thermals, woollen cap and gloves
- Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen
- Personal medicines and altitude medication as advised by your doctor
- Power bank, torch with red-light mode and spare batteries
- Snacks and refillable water bottle
- Cash – there are no ATMs in Hanle
Responsible Travel
Changthang's wildlife and pastures are delicate. Stay on established tracks, do not chase animals for photographs, carry back all your waste, and respect local and military instructions. Photography of military installations is prohibited.
