"How much will Kashmir cost?" is the first question most travellers ask us. The honest answer is that it depends on three things: when you travel, where you stay and how you get around. This guide breaks the cost into parts so you can build a realistic budget.
1. Flights to Srinagar
Return economy fares from Delhi usually range from ₹7,000 to ₹14,000 per person when booked a month or more ahead. From Mumbai, Bengaluru or Kolkata expect ₹12,000–₹22,000. Fares spike during summer holidays (May–June), Diwali, Christmas and New Year. Booking 6–8 weeks early saves the most.
2. Hotels and Houseboats
| Stay type | Per night (double room) |
|---|---|
| Budget hotel in Srinagar | ₹1,800 – ₹3,000 |
| Deluxe houseboat on Dal or Nigeen Lake | ₹3,500 – ₹8,000 |
| 3-star hotel in Gulmarg or Pahalgam | ₹3,500 – ₹6,500 |
| Luxury resort (Gulmarg/Pahalgam) | ₹12,000 – ₹30,000+ |
Most travellers combine one or two houseboat nights with hotels elsewhere. Read our Srinagar houseboat guide to choose well.
3. Local Transport
A private sedan with driver for a 5–6 day circuit (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam) typically costs ₹15,000–₹22,000; an SUV such as an Innova costs more. Note that in Pahalgam and Sonmarg, local union taxis are mandatory for sightseeing points like Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari, or Thajiwas – budget roughly ₹2,500–₹4,000 per vehicle per place.
4. Sightseeing and Activities
- Gulmarg Gondola: Phase 1 and Phase 2 tickets are priced separately; together they cost a few thousand rupees per person. Book only on the official portal linked from J&K Tourism Development Corporation.
- Shikara ride on Dal Lake: fixed hourly rates are displayed at the ghats.
- Pony rides in Pahalgam and Sonmarg: rates vary by route; agree before you start.
- Skiing (winter): equipment hire and an instructor for a day cost ₹2,500–₹5,000.
5. Food
Kashmir is easy on food budgets. A good meal at a local restaurant costs ₹300–₹600 per person; a traditional wazwan meal costs more. Try kahwa, noon chai, rogan josh, yakhni and the bakery breads.
Sample Budgets (per couple, excluding flights)
- 5 days, budget: ₹28,000 – ₹38,000
- 6 days, mid-range with a houseboat night: ₹45,000 – ₹65,000
- 7 days, premium: ₹90,000 – ₹1,50,000
A package usually works out cheaper than booking each piece separately, because hotels and cabs are contracted for the season.
How to Save Money
- Travel in April, September or October – lovely weather and lower hotel rates.
- Avoid the Christmas–New Year week if you are on a budget.
- Stay in Srinagar and do Gulmarg and Sonmarg as day trips.
- Book the Gondola online in advance – queues and touts at the base cost more.
- Carry cash for union taxis and small vendors.
