Srinagar Houseboat Guide: Dal vs Nigeen Lake, Categories and Booking Tips

Everything about staying on a Srinagar houseboat – Dal Lake vs Nigeen Lake, deluxe and luxury categories, prices, what is included.

Travel GuidesKashmir

A night on a carved cedar-wood houseboat is one of the defining experiences of Kashmir. Houseboats have been a part of Srinagar since the 19th century, and today there are hundreds of them on Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake and the Jhelum. Quality varies a lot, so here is how to choose.

Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake?

Dal Lake is the famous one – lively, close to the boulevard, with views of the Zabarwan hills and constant shikara traffic. It is ideal if you want atmosphere and easy access to restaurants and shops.

Nigeen Lake, north of Dal, is quieter, cleaner and more residential. Mornings here are peaceful, with kingfishers and lotus fields in summer. It suits couples and anyone who prefers calm.

Jhelum river boats are cheaper but less scenic.

Houseboat Categories

Houseboats are graded by the tourism department:

  • Super Deluxe / Luxury: ornate walnut carving, large bedrooms with attached baths, heating, often Wi-Fi. Best for honeymooners.
  • Deluxe (A-category): comfortable rooms, good food, decent views.
  • B and C categories: basic, budget-friendly.

Expect roughly ₹3,500–₹8,000 per night for a good deluxe room including breakfast and dinner, and more for heritage luxury boats.

What Is Usually Included

  • A free shikara transfer from the ghat to your boat
  • Breakfast and dinner (Kashmiri home-style cooking)
  • Kahwa on arrival
  • Heater or heated blankets in winter (confirm this!)

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  1. Is the boat on Dal or Nigeen, and which ghat is it near?
  2. Is it a standalone boat or one of a cluster?
  3. Is the shikara transfer free at any time of night?
  4. Is the bathroom attached, with hot water?
  5. Is there heating in winter, and is it extra?

Check recent photos and reviews – the same name can refer to several boats owned by one family.

Life on a Houseboat

Floating vendors arrive by shikara selling flowers, saffron, papier-mâché and kahwa. Bargain gently. An early morning shikara to the floating vegetable market is worth the 5 a.m. wake-up. In the evening, sit on the front deck and watch the lights come on across the lake.

Safety and Etiquette

  • Keep valuables locked; boats are open structures.
  • Wear life jackets on shikaras if you are not a confident swimmer.
  • Alcohol policies differ – ask the owner.
  • Dress modestly and respect the family who runs the boat.
